What Are Genital Warts?
Genital warts appear as small, rough growths on the skin and mucous membranes. In females, genital warts develop on the vulva, vagina, cervix, and around or inside the anus. In males, they can appear on the penis, scrotum, and around or inside the anus.
HPV infection that causes genital warts spread through skin-to-skin contact during oral sex, vaginal and anal sex. Even if there are no visible warts, the HPV virus can still be passed to sexual partners.
Some HPV infections caused by high-risk HPV types (HPV 16 and 18) are linked to cervical cancer cases.
Symptoms of Genital Warts
Genital warts can appear in various areas and are generally caused by specific types of HPV strains (HPV 6 and HPV 11). Common symptoms associated with this condition include:
- Itching: A persistent itch in the affected area may occur, leading to discomfort and a strong urge to scratch.
- Pain: Some individuals may experience pain in the genital or anal regions, particularly if the warts are large or irritated.
- Discomfort: General discomfort in the affected areas can impact daily activities and quality of life.
- Bleeding: In some cases, there might be bleeding, especially if the warts become sore or are accidentally injured.
- Visible bumps: The most recognisable symptom is the appearance of small, flesh-coloured or grey growths; these can be raised or flat, solitary or clustered.
If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

3-Step Process of Genital Warts Treatment at Ezra Clinic
The treatment for genital warts typically involves an initial consultation, followed by a treatment procedure, and finally, a recovery period where aftercare is vital. Each step of the process is designed to provide tailored care, address patient concerns, and facilitate effective healing.
1. Consultation
During the consultation, our doctor will gather comprehensive information, including the patient’s medical history, present symptoms, as well as sexual history. This assessment helps our doctor diagnose genital warts and determine the most appropriate treatment option.
The consultation typically lasts about 30 minutes, allowing ample time to discuss any questions or concerns. You will be advised to also screen for other sexually transmitted infections if you have genital warts diagnosed.
2. Treatment Procedure
Treatment procedures vary depending on the chosen option.
Cryotherapy Procedure
- Preparation: The treatment area is first cleaned to minimise the risk of infection.
- Application of Liquid Nitrogen: Our doctor uses a spray device to apply liquid nitrogen to the wart, freezing it instantly.
- Wart Elimination: The frozen wart will gradually die off, typically crusting and falling off within 1-2 weeks.
Duration: The entire cryotherapy session typically lasts around 5 minutes, making it a quick and efficient treatment option. Cryotherapy sessions are typically performed once a week and the number of sessions depends on the severity of your warts.
Topical Treatments Procedure
- Application: The patient applies the cream or solution directly to the visible genital warts as instructed. This is usually done at home. The cream is applied usually before bedtime and kept overnight for 8 hours. The cream then has to be washed off the next morning to reduce the risk of skin irritation. The cream is also recommended to be used on alternate days and not daily.
- Regular Monitoring: Patients are encouraged to regularly check the area for changes and to report any adverse reactions to their doctor.
Duration: The overall treatment period may extend up to 16 weeks or longer, depending on the response to the topical treatment, with regular applications as directed. Some patients who do not respond well to the cream may still end up requiring cryotherapy to get their genital warts treated.
Recovery and Aftercare
The healing time for genital warts varies based on the treatment method used. Generally, the treated area dries up within one to two weeks with cryotherapy, while topical treatments require up to 4 months for full effectiveness, with visible results often seen in a few weeks.
Common side effects following genital wart treatment may include:
Pain and Discomfort: This is typically mild and can be managed with pain relievers.
Itching and Irritation: These sensations are common but should not lead to scratching.
Swelling and Redness: These symptoms usually resolve on their own as healing progresses.
Bleeding: Minor bleeding may occur, particularly if the treated area is disturbed. If bleeding is excessive or persistent, contact a healthcare provider.
Post-Treatment Instructions
- Keep the Area Clean and Dry: After treatment, maintain cleanliness by washing the area gently with warm water and avoiding soaps directly on the site. Pat dry using a towel or a hairdryer on a low setting.
- Avoid Scratching: Itching may occur, but scratching can lead to bleeding and infection. Instead, apply ice packs or take over-the-counter pain relief if necessary.
- Abstain from Sexual Activity: It is recommended to avoid sexual contact strictly until all your warts are completely treated as you may spread hpv to your partner.
- Follow Hygiene Practices: Use separate tissues or towel to clean the area. avoid putting harsh soaps which may cause more irritation.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain medications like paracetamol can be taken to alleviate discomfort during the recovery period.
You should return for a follow-up examination to ensure complete healing and address any remaining lesions. Also, keep an eye on the treated area for any signs of new warts or changes. If new growths appear, consult your healthcare provider immediately to prevent genital warts.
