Vaginal itching is a very common condition that affects many women. Most women would probably at least have experienced this bothersome issue at least at some point in their lives.
Vaginal itching can range from mild symptoms, to moderately severe symptoms that can affect a woman’s quality of life.
It can be a frustrating and unpleasant problem to experience and if not treated correctly, can lead to worsening symptoms and disruption to your quality of life.
Hence seeing the right doctor for this is important and will go a long way in treating this issue properly.
What Are The Causes Of Vaginal Itching?
Vaginal Infection
Infections such as Yeast Infection or Bacterial Vaginosis can present with vaginal itching due to inflammation and irritation. This can cause itching in the vagina itself, or itching around the vulva region.
The vulva and groin region commonly traps heat and moisture, which creates the perfect breeding ground for fungal or bacterial organisms to thrive.
This may also lead to an itchy red rash that may appear as well.
Sometimes, vaginal itching may also be a sign of a Sexually Transmitted Infection.
Skin Irritation
Many women commonly use products such as feminine wash, wipes or deodorant around the vaginal region. These products contain strong and harsh chemicals which can lead to significant skin irritation, resulting to persistent vaginal itching.
Other common causes of skin irritation causing vaginal itch include treatments like Brazilian IPL or waxing.
Vulva Skin Conditions
Underlying medical conditions such as Lichen Simplex Chronicus or Lichen Sclerosus can also present as vaginal or vulva itching. This is attributed to underlying chronic skin inflammation.
Other skin conditions such as Psoriasis can also present around the genital area which leads to symptoms such as vaginal itching, or a characteristic pink rash.
These skin conditions often cause severe intense itching that can potentially affect the woman’s quality of life.
Very rarely, chronic itching or long standing itching may also be a sign of Vulvar Cancer.
What To Expect When I Consult a Doctor for Vaginal Itching?
It is important to consult an experienced women’s health doctor for this problem.
Your doctor will first begin by taking a detailed history, which may include a sexual history.
Following which a physical examination of the vaginal region is performed.
The physical examination is an important step in helping the doctor identify any associated rash or discharge, which can help guide our diagnosis.
Next, investigations such as vaginal swabs may be performed if necessary.
What Is the Best Treatment for Vaginal Itching?
To treat vaginal itching effectively, the most important step is to get an accurate diagnosis.
This begins with consulting with a doctor who is experienced in treating such conditions.
Treatment methods will be tailored according to the underlying cause of vaginal itching.
This may include different types of topical creams or oral medications.
We do not recommend buying medications online or over the counter to attempt to self medicate.
This oftentimes leads to worsening or prolonging of symptoms when treated incorrectly.
At Ezra Clinic, we specialize in treating women’s health conditions like persistent vaginal itching with a detailed and comprehensive consultation and treatment process.
