What is Botox / Dysport Jaw Slimming in Singapore?

Botox for face slimming works by relaxing your bulky lower jaw muscles. Once relaxed, your jaw muscles start to lose 60-80% of its bulk. Your muscle atrophy and jaw reduction occur over 3-4 weeks to achieve a sharper, slimmer and more feminine face.

Jaw Botox is a commonly done aesthetic procedure intended to slim the face by causing atrophy to the masseter muscles - found at the angle of the jaw. By doing so, a squarish and wider facial profile can be improved to achieve a sharper, slimmer face shape, which is more sought after.

Jaw botox is a simple and effective treatment to improve these symptoms. Jaw botox also helps these patients to temporarily minimize damage to their dental health and report less pain and soreness of the temporal-mandibular joint.

What jaw botox can/cannot do?

It is important to get an experienced doctor to evaluate your face before deciding if jaw botox will be able to achieve your desired look.

Botox can temporarily weaken the muscle strength and cause muscle atrophy but it does not change the bone profile significantly. If the cause of the squarish jaw is mainly secondary to the bone component, you may not see significant improvements after Botox injection. You may require a jaw correction operation. Or if buccal fat is the area of concern, then obviously a neurotoxin will have no effect in this case.

A consultation with an aesthetic doctor will be able to point you in the right direction.

How long does jaw botox take effect?

After injection, you will notice that the weakness of the muscle starts to set in at about Day 3 to day 7. You will experience some tiredness, and a longer ‘chewing time’ especially with food like nuts and steak.

If you are doing Botox jaw for bruxism, you will experience relief at this point. However, it will take about 4 weeks to appreciate the change in your face shape as the muscle size slowly decreases.

How long does jaw botox last?

Typically an adequate dose of Botox should last you about 4-6 months depending on muscle size and the degree of use. In patients with bruxism, and typically bigger muscles at presentation, they might feel that the effects last for only 3 months.

Am I suitable for jaw botox?

The most important criteria to decide if you are a suitable candidate for jaw botox will be the size of the jaw muscles when you bite down hard. You are likely to see more drastic results if the original muscle size is sizeable.

Pregnant and breastfeeding mummies will have to wait to have the procedure done as Botox is a neurotoxin, however safe and harmless it may seem.

You may not be a suitable candidate if you have a history of botulinum toxicity or taking medications like anticholinergics used for Parkinson’s disease or muscle relaxants.

What happens during a jaw botox procedure?

Numbing cream can be applied to minimize the discomfort prior to the procedure. Some doctors use ice to numb the area. A few injection points are made after assessing the underlying anatomy. It is a procedure that takes less than 5 min!

Dos and don’ts of jaw botox

You can have a steak or chew some nuts straight after the procedure to ‘lock in’ the botox

Lie down in the next 2-3 hours to prevent diffusion of injected botox to the surrounding muscles

Is Jaw Botox painful?

Generally, Botox jaw injections are very well tolerated especially with the measures that are taken to ensure that it is the most painless possible. The procedure is quick and the needles used are extremely fine to ensure greater comfort.

Does jaw botox cause skin sagging?

It is scientifically not possible for jaw botox to affect skin laxity.

However, some people may notice more prominent laugh lines after repeated Botox injections. This happens as the original surface that the skin covers was bigger and when the muscles shrink in size the ‘excess’ skin may accentuate the laugh lines.

However, this is not common and skin lifting devices such as Ultherapy can usually correct this.

Is botox safe for TMJ?

Botox injections are extremely safe. It is off-label use for treating the TMJ and it is a commonly done procedure with good results.

Will my face look stiff after jaw botox?

Not usually. The masseters are not used for facial expression. Having a stiff or frozen look is not possible. However, there is a small group of patients that reports that their smiles don’t look the same, or their dimple may temporarily become less obvious.

Will I have trouble eating after a jaw botox treatment?

Apart from the masseters where Botox is injected, there are 3 other muscles that are responsible for chewing. In the first week following injection, you may feel a bit ‘tired’ from chewing. But this is only temporary and most patients don’t find it an issue at all.

How long is the downtime for jaw botox injections?

No downtime is expected. Injection points using the finest needle are hardly visible. Bruising over the area is not common as there are no big vessels running through the region. However if you are on medications like plavix and aspirin, the risk of bruising is higher.

Are there any side effects of Jaw botox?

Potential side effects like pain, infection, inflammation, redness, swelling are uncommon. Allergic reactions resulting in itch, wheeze, asthma, rash, hives and dizziness are VERY rare and I have never seen such reactions with the amount of Botox used for aesthetic procedures.

How much botox/dysport do I need for jaw reduction?

We always compare against the number of Botox units as they were first used and studied.

For a big facial muscle like masseter on an average, most patients will require about 25 to 30 units for a full sized masseter on each side of the face. With repeated injections, when the muscle is smaller a smaller dose may be sufficient.

It is important for your doctor to assess the size of the masseters before deciding on the amount of botox required. A reliable medical clinic should also offer a follow up appointment to ensure that the botox was effectively delivered

The efficacy of the different FDA approved neurotoxin conversion generally follow 1 botox unit = 1 xeomin unit = 2.5 dysport units.
